ORC Week 4: The Beach Cabin Attic Makeover- A DIY-ish Preppy Pirate Boat

One Room Challenge

Hi again! The Beach Cabin is coming along for the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda from Calling it Home and Better Homes and Gardens. (You can read more about the challenge as well as check in on the other participants here!). This is such a fun idea and is just what I needed to motivate me to finish the Beach Cabin Attic. There have been a few times throughout this challenge that I’ve wanted to stop, so it’s been nice to have such a supportive group to hold me accountable to finish it up. If you missed some of the fun things that happened last week, you can check them out here.

There was a lot of painting and furniture moving (and floor scratching and touchups) this week. This is no easy feat with two kids and a puppy who are just dying to play in the unfinished boat.

Our contractor was super speedy and installed the bottom of the boat. I had sent him the plans Ana White had used for a sailboat sandbox (check that out here) with a few tweaks to fit our attic. (By the way, this is my favorite kind of DIY-ish project… the one where I have the idea and plan and someone else handles the nail gun!) I white-washed it for a semi-rustic look, which involved taking a cup, throwing in some Decorator’s White paint and a splash of water (very scientific-ha!).

For the sail, I was debating making my own triangular sail (and had measured for it) when I noticed a wall-hanging I had purchased this summer in one of the bedrooms. Upon holding it up to the pipe, I decided that it fit just fine and was one less DIY thing to tackle this fall. We just staple gun-ned it to the ceiling and called it a day. (So, maybe this isn’t a sailboat? But, it’s some kind of boat… Like a Preppy Pirate Boat? Oh well… the kids don’t seem to mind- haha!)

There is still quite a bit to do but now it’s the fun of decorating and styling (well…. actually one more DIY project…)! Stay tuned… this project is soooo close to being finished and (hopefully!) coming together!
