How to “Tile” A Fireplace with Wall Stencils and a GIVEAWAY!

Good morning All!

Since it is officially after Labor Day, we got to work (actually on Labor Day) sprucing up the living room, specifically the fireplace. I was so happy with how our last project using Cutting Edge Stencils turned out that I decided to give a new stencil a try to update our fireplace. (If you missed the Laundry Room Makeover, check out the details of the stenciled flooring here and the entire “after” here.)

(As a quick aside, Cutting Edge Stencils is amazing to work with- they are very responsive and friendly. Even though I was going to use their product regardless, they sent me the stencils, brushes and even a leveler in return for sharing my results here and on my social media. And, we even get to participate in a giveaway! More info on that at the end of this post, so keep reading! Nonetheless, all of the below thoughts are my own 🙂

Back to Labor Day… We were spoiled with a wonderful weekend, but as it goes, Labor Day was rainy. The kids put on a movie and then played with some neighbors for a bit and we got to work painting the base of the fireplace white. (Make sure you use non flammable and heat resistant paint if you use your fireplace.)

Here is a “before” shot of the fireplace for reference…

I had a lot of fun obsessing over the tile pattern. After considering a few different styles, I landed on the Maestro Tile Stencil. It wasn’t too busy and seemed to match the vibe of the Beach Cabin. Cutting Edge Stencils sent two stencils and I would highly recommend ordering two of the stencil of your choice. It really helps to move the project along because while one square is drying, you are able to paint another one (this would have been very helpful with the laundry room makeover!). I was also given a foam roller and brushes. The foam roller is my absolute favorite! The brushes were nice for touch ups too, or you may find that one of the larger brushes works better for stenciling… it’s nice to have options right there once you start the project.

After our base coat dried, I poured the paint and stirred in a scoop of Chalk-Tique. When rolling the paint, it is necessary to ensure you do not have too much paint on the roller. You can roll excess paint on a wet paper towel or a piece of cardboard. Next, I taped the first stencil with painter’s tape in the center-ish of the fireplace (I was working with painted tile, so I tried to at least begin in one of the tiles even though the sizing didn’t match up exactly). I let the stencil dry for a few minutes before pulling it up. After waiting for a few more minutes to ensure that it was able to completely dry, I did the same on either side of the center tile. From there, I was able to incorporate the second tile and alternate sides.

How to Tile Your Fireplace with a Stencil

How to Tile Your Fireplace with a StencilHad I been using actual tile, there were areas for which I would have had to cut tile. Using the stencil, I was simply able to bend the stencil and paint away.

There were areas where I was not patient and pulled the tile up to soon or had used too much paint. For these areas, I took a wet q-tip and just rubbed away the extra paint.

I’m so happy with how this easy and cost effective DIY with a wall stencil transformed the look of our fireplace and really brought a more finished look to the Beach Cabin’s living room.
