Nursery Room Decor: A Gender Neutral Nursery for Twins

Hi and Happy Monday! We were able to see our niece and nephew a few times outside over the holidays. They always make us smile! I can’t believe that it has been almost 2 years since we all put together this gender neutral nursery for them. I’ll try to remember what we did, but you may want to google the board and batten process from someone who actually keeps track of their DIY’s step-by-step.

Gender Neutral Nursery- Before

First, let’s take a look at the BEFORE. We all have had that room as homeowners. When we move in, we have grand plans and then eventually get tired and hit a wall. In this case, it was an eggplant-colored wall that my SIL and BIL had inherited.

Because we were going for a bit of a lighter, softer color scheme for the nursery, I needed to prime over the eggplant. I had never used the kind of primer that was recommended and secretly freaked out as I was putting it up on the walls. It didn’t look smooth, and the smell didn’t help either. Somehow it ended up working out!

My SIL and I held up different paint options but ultimately ended up with a color that was already in much of the upstairs. I love it so much! Benjamin Moore’s Alaskan Husky is such a lovely gray paint color. I feel that it is very gender neutral and creates a calming atmosphere. I painted three of the walls in Alaskan Husky. On the last wall, I painted Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace about 5 feet from the floor where we’d be putting up the Board and Batten and then painted the top the Alaskan Husky.

While my SIL and BIL were at work, Gretchen and I put up the Board and Batten. As mentioned previously, I don’t really remember the process entirely. I do, however, remember and laugh a bit thinking about us going back and forth to Lowes/Home Depot, using Liquid Nails for the first time, and spending about 30 minutes on You Tube, trying to figure out how to attach the nail gun to the compressor. It took a while to get there, but I think it was worth it!

Here are some PROGRESS SHOTS.

We finished up and then  my SIL and BIL picked out and put together the cribs. They also hung the artwork that my SILs found. We worked together to find a rug to go over the carpet and a ceiling fan to replace the old one.

Here are some AFTER shots. I went over to take some photos while they were out of town. I left everything as it was, so that the kids could be put in their cribs with all of their necessities when they got home. It’s crazy how things have changed in 7 years. I loved seeing all of the new (and some old) things for babies. Sources are listed below.

Thanks so much for taking this tour of my niece and nephew’s gender neutral nursery with me! I think that the paint colors and board and batten will transition so nicely into their toddler and kid rooms. Speaking of kids’ rooms, you can check out our tween’s Beachy Vintage Bedroom here. And our son’s Coastal Bedroom here.
