Tween Girl Bedroom: Beachy Vintage

Well… our daughter will be turning 9 this spring, which will officially throw her into the “tween” category. She requested a Beach bedroom, which to her, meant turquoise walls. Ombre if all the stars were aligned. Apparently, this meant that her peachy-pink walls were “not cool” anymore. This was a hard refresh from the mom who, as a little girl, had pink carpet, pink wallpaper, and pink bedding- haha! It’s hard to get rid of the pink! Being a true “tween,” our daughter still wanted a Princess Canopy over her bed but a more grown up overall feel. And, we wanted to keep her lighting and dresser. So, we landed on a Beachy Vintage vibe, a true compromise.

While our house is not overly vintage, it was built in the 1920s and naturally has a vintage and traditional feeling. I’d say that her old room with the peachy-pink walls and ruffle navy duvet leaned more that way, too.

The Bedding

We decided to go with a neutral wall (shocking, I know). We used the same color that is in our son’s room in order to stay somewhat consistent with the paint colors in our house. (You can check his room out here. It will also be getting a little refresh this spring… more on that in a bit.) As the room came together, we added in the mint through accents and her comforter. (Side note: I’m officially done with buying duvets and fixing them daily. This comforter is great and makes it super easy for her to make her own bed and have it look neat and put together).

The bedding feels like a nice marriage between beachy and vintage with the ocean-colored comforter and the old quilt that was being stored in her closet. The quilt was my grandmother’s, and I was thrilled when I glanced into the room one day and saw that our daughter was using it.

The Shelving

We went with lighter wood shelving to compliment the beach theme. We kept the painting our daughter had done of jelly fish a few years ago and added some bins for cds and books. The cd player was a hand-me-down from her dad. (He has become quite the technician, bringing life into all of his old stereos and placing them strategically throughout the house- haha!)

The Reading Nook

We created this sweet reading nook and bought a piece of art to remind our daughter just how amazing she is! The beach photos lend a calming aspect to this space. The swivel chair is a fun addition and also gives the room a relaxed vibe.

The Canopy

We kept the chandelier, a gift from my parents, which leans more toward the vintage vibe. We also added a canopy over the bed. You can’t really tell in the photos, but it is a mint dip-dye, so I guess the ombre really did make an appearance.

The Hat

The hat… I love the personality that this hat brings into the room. It is truly a tween sort of thing. (And since I pulled her “do not enter my room” sign off the door, this is a nice substitute.) The hat is simply hung on a nail, so if she does decide she’d like to use it at the beach this summer, that is also just fine. It’s great when decorations can pull double duty.

The Dresser

This dresser has moved with our daughter and has remained the perfect accessory to her room. Who knew when I bought it 7 years ago, that it would match her tween room so perfectly? We had a lot of fun stringing up the lights and clipping photos that she has taken with her polaroid camera. My dad had college pennants that had been in his high school classroom back in the day and the kids spent the better part of a morning dividing them up.
