WEEK 6

We’re back with Week 6 of the One Room Challenge. 2020 has been such a heavy and eye opening year. Last week, we took a collective and important pause to come together against police brutality and social injustice and to support the Black Lives Matter movement.

PENDANT LIGHTING

We have light! Well, technically, we had light, but now it is coming from this perfect cabin light pendant. It had only been sitting in our garage since last summer. Chalk that up to another “why didn’t we do this sooner” for the beach cabin. Oh well! The pendant is the perfect size for the nook and the huge DIY dining table that we recently added. Of course, we waited so long to install the light that it is no longer available. This cabin light pendant would have come in a close second.

PILLOWS

I keep waiting and checking for the benches to come back in stock but am afraid I may have missed my window. Fingers crossed that they will be back next summer! We added some pillows from the Studio McGee line at Target and thew in some old Pottery Barn outdoor pillows for good measure too. I love how the soft blue grey in the pillows tie in so nicely withe blues and grays we have sprinkled (showered?) throughout the rest of the beach cabin.

PLANTS

And R finally got his greenery! I love the juxtaposition of the feminine hobnail planter from The Counting House with the rustic table and cabin pendant lighting. And the zz plant makes yet another appearance! This plant and its flexibility fit perfectly with our lifestyle.

The space is almost finished and we are are already enjoying the bigger table and continue to appreciate how it feels like we’re having dinner in a treehouse. But better.

HANDMADE RUG

I ordered this handmade rug from World Market for the space and adore it! It’s just slightly too big for the nook and having eaten in the space, I’m not sure that a rug would be the best fit until we’ve perhaps honed our manners and spillage. That said, stay tuned because I am determined to incorporate some Block Art from India either at the Beach Cabin or our Modern Traditional home.

ARTWORK

I’m also working on some art for the wall that doesn’t have windows. I don’t mind blank walls at all, but maybe a pop of color and a nod to the beach would be fun, too. This painting from One Kings Lane is perfect! I’m also trying to find a way to print an iPhone photo I took of the kids from several summers ago. A friend’s dad is a professional photographer and added a watercolor application to the photo. Soooo nice!!! Then, we played around with different colors via Photoshop and Lightroom. I think I’ve landed on a color scheme somewhat similar to the painting that I mentioned above. Now, I’m just working with a print studio to figure out how large I can print it without sacrificing resolution. Stay tuned!

ONE MORE THING

Oh, and somewhat related… I’m still deciding about painting the living room bookcase. I’ve decided to wait and track how often we actually need our living room ceiling fan and look at alternative options. And the track lighting—ahhh— I would love to be able to switch them out for recessed lighting, but I’m not sure that the ceilings are thick enough for recessed lights. Since Michigan is just opening back up, I think that I’ll wait a bit and then get an electrician’s opinion.
