White Kitchen Nook | ORC 2 | Mackinaw Road

Hi there! Well… we have a White Kitchen Nook! And I could not be happier with it!!! This is the moment where I say, “Why didn’t we do this 3 years ago?!?” R keeps saying, “It is so much brighter in here!” This isn’t usually a compliment from my lover of all  decor that is dark and moody, but it really seems like he is impressed! Let’s back up…

You may remember from last week’s post that this is what our kitchen nook looked like before we began this project.

Then, I deglossed, lightly sanded, and primed all of the wood. This part took forever. I had to use the paint brush to get in between all of the wood slats and some nooks and crannies were very difficult to get to. Then, I used a roller to cover the wood. I did this two-to-three times. (I sort of lost track!)

It was a bit exhausting just thinking about doing this process all over again with the paint. But, R had recently bought this paint sprayer for his latest music room at home. He had shown me how to use it at the time, and it looked like a fun tool to try sometime.

And then that time came. I decided I would rather spend time prepping/covering everything that I didn’t want white than spend time trying to get into all those nooks again.

That afternoon, I called Sherwin Williams and described the project. I ended up purchasing their SuperPaint line in Satin in Extra White. I prepped the space by covering the windows and floors.

The next morning, we began painting. As with all of my projects, I ended up getting a teensy bit (correction: a lot) of help from R. He was so nice to jump in and help. It was great to be able to switch on and off. This made the task go by much more quickly. What’s that saying? Teamwork Makes the Dream Work. Because the paint was thick, we decided to water it down a bit with a 3/4 paint to 1/4 water ratio (not sure if this is advisable/what you are supposed to do, but it ended up working well for us in this space).

We were able to get in between the wood slats and the weird little nooks with ease. There was some clean up/scraping but overall I liked the sprayer so much better than using a brush and roller in this area. That said, I did have a brush and roller ready to catch any drips. Again, teamwork.

Now we just have to map out how large we want to build the table out. The blue tape on the floor is mapping out the bench. There will be more details in the coming weeks on both the table and bench plans. We are planning to add a new DIY top to this IKEA table that we already have. (Although, I’m very, VERY tempted by this Pottery Barn one– it is shown in the design board below.) I have also ordered the benches and think I have figured out how to have them “float” like the inspiration nook that I shared in this post. What else? Oh, the pendant lighting. I’m planning on using the pendant from Arhaus that I bought last fall when I was trying to decide what would work best in our kitchen nook at home. (I have a round-up of all of the possible pendants here.) It is pictured in the design board but looks like it isn’t available anymore. I am also still considering whether or not to place a rug (likely outdoor) in this area… I’m deciding between this one or something like this one currently.

And there you have it~ We are now the proud owners of a white kitchen nook!! R is already talking about “maybe getting some green for the middle of the table.” Haha- we’ve got 4 more weeks to go before that happens! I talked about the inspiration for this space and the week-by-week play-by-play last week. But I forgot to include the overall plan… So, here is the design board. Of course, I will probably change it by Week 6. At least it is a jumping off point!
