ORC Kitchen Nook Refresh | Week 1 | Priming & The Plan

Hi Everyone! I’m so excited that you’re here and am also thrilled to begin another One Room Challenge (ORC)! This spring, I am going to be refreshing our kitchen nook at the Beach Cabin. It isn’t exactly a kitchen nook but it is by the kitchen, so close enough!

But first let me give you a little tour of the living room and kitchen area so you can get a better idea of how the spaces work together.

If you have been here for awhile, you know that I have been debating, debating, debating whether or not to paint the living room and/or kitchen nook white. We have already painted many of the Beach Cabin Rooms white. The difference is that the wood had already been painted over (mostly in yellow) in the rooms we repainted. So far (click on the bold words for the before/after of each room), we have painted the kitchen, the guest bedroom, the entry, and the music room white. Well… I finally decided to let the kitchen nook join the white paint party. It is separated by a lip in the flooring, so it seemed to make sense to try some white paint in this area.

I used a deglosser on the walls first. Then I lightly sanded them. Next, it was time for primer. And more primer. And more primer. I decided to leave the window frames as they were to tie in the rest of the living room area.

I was sure that Benjamin Moore Frostine was going to be the way to go. (I love it in our living room at home!) But, for some reason, the Beach Cabin is partial to Benjamin Moore Decorator’s White and Sherwin Williams Extra White. I ended up going with Sherwin Williams Extra White in Satin- more on that next week. (Hopefully this will be a good choice and easy to wipe down as our children love to take a bite of Nutella toast and then do a little dance running their hands all over the walls before taking the next chocolate-filled taste.)

I should back up to the overall plan, though… I am so in love with this kitchen nook by the amazing Amber Interiors! It is my dream kitchen nook. This definitely looks like a custom bench. It is amazing! With the new white walls at the Beach Cabin, I want to bring back in some of the warmth of the wood throughout the rest of the living room and I think a wicker like this might be the way to go! I also love the added seating that incorporating a bench seat will provide! We often have our families out to the Beach Cabin for summer birthdays, Father’s Day, etc. and the increased capacity around the table will definitely be a win!

Here is the plan! I’m hoping that by sharing it here, I’ll be more likely to stick with the it.

Week 1: Prime the Walls

Week 2: Paint the Walls

Week 3: DIY Dining Table

Week 4: Bench Seat

Week 5: Throw Pillows/Install the Light Fixture (and maybe also a new fan in the living room)

Week 6: Styling/Final Reveal

That’s all for now! Don’t forget to check out all of the lovely projects going on as part of the ORC here
