One Room Challenge | White Kitchen Nook | Updates

Hi! Guess what?! There are actually 8 weeks of the One Room Challenge this year! Which had me thinking that we should probably just paint the adjacent living room white. (It is actually all one room with no divider between the nook and the living room, so we’d still be following the ONE room part of the challenge.) R gave a very definitive NO to that idea. Baby steps. However, that didn’t stop my eyes from drifting into that part of the room. There are a few updates that won’t really have the WOW factor of painting it all white but that will definitely up this room’s game a bit.

First up… the bookcase. With the ultimate goal of painting the entire living room white, maybe getting started on this second nook would be a good idea. Or… should the bookcase area be a charcoal gray for an eventual accent in the all white room? Decisions. (If you’re wondering about the DIY shower curtain ottoman, you can read a “how to”-ish post here.)

How to DIY an Old Storage Bench

Second… if you read this post from last year, you know that I’ve been considering changing out the ceiling fan for awhile now. I was originally thinking that a white fan would be great as it would fade away into the ceiling since ceiling fans aren’t exactly sought after design elements. But then, I was thinking that since I have somehow managed to add random modern components (I just can’t seem to help myself) maybe a black ceiling fan would be nice… We’re considering this one(1) and this one(2). And this one (3) and this one (4). This one (5) is another good option! Lastly (I promise!), I love the simplicity (and price tag) of this one (6). You may be wondering why we don’t just switch out the fan for a pendant. I did consider this, but we don’t have air conditioning at the Beach Cabin. We only wish we had it during a few nights per summer. But, we really do LOVE/find necessary the ceiling fan for those hot July nights. It’s amazing how much it really helps to circulate air. So, a ceiling fan replacement it is. (At the time of this original publishing, all fans are under the $200 mark.)

Black Ceiling Fan OptionsThird… while we are talking about lighting, let’s talk about the track lighting throughout the main living space. Yet another visually unappealing yet necessary part of the beach cabin. The added light is really nice and we are not up for tearing up the ceiling to add more lighting that way. That said, it seems that there should be a way to make it a little bit/lot less obvious. I’m on the hunt for solutions, solutions. If you have any ideas or any experience with switching out or updating track lighting, please leave a comment. I’d love suggestions!

Finally… a quick switch of the hardware to black door knobs on the bedrooms and bathroom would make a subtle but effective change. We will see…

Oh, and in case it seems like this week was just filled with thinking/planning, it surprisingly wasn’t- haha! We also got started on our DIY Kitchen Nook Table. I’m so excited to share that with you next week! And the benches too!! There is actually furniture where the blue tape was last week- yay!
