How to Prepare for Leaving Your Children

Friday Finds on Mackinaw Road: Little Passports

Does anyone else have children who become super well-behaved and cute right before you leave for a trip? Mine do! We love to travel with our kids but sometimes the timing with school and activities doesn’t allow for them to tag along. And, honestly, while we absolutely love to travel with our children, there are a lot of positives that come from leaving them home every once and while. These are the Top 5 for us: #1 We get sleep! #2 We get to have conversations that don’t strictly involve the day to day business of family life. #3 The grandparents have unlimited access to the grandchildren. #4 We miss our children A LOT #5 We come back as refreshed and better parents.

I used to be super specific about the food the kids should eat, made make-ahead meals, arranged rides to and from activities, etc., etc. And guess what? The grandparents brought enough Kit Kats for dessert every night, they took the kids out to their favorite pizza and ice cream places, they watched movies to their hearts’ content, and they were sad when the kids had to leave for their activities. And, honestly, having grown up with my two grandmothers watching my brother and I often, this is the stuff memories are made of. So… this table is my kinda-sorta-trying-my-best-to-not-be too-particular compromise.

REE PRINTABLE | When Leaving Kids | Kid Instructions | Parents Only Travel

You can click on the photo above or download it here. Clearly, you may have to adjust it based on your number of children, how many different schools they attend, age of children, involvement in after-school activities, etc. but hopefully you find this to be a good starting point. I could see needing to add things on the back such as “items needed for [insert after-school activity here]” as well as a section for medical needs, allergies, and specific food for baby/health needs.

What about you? How often do you leave your children? Any funny stories or useful anecdotes?
