Christmas Living Room Styling

Christmas Living Room Styling is one of the most fun (and sometimes frustrating) activities of the year for me! This year, I am attempting to slowly add in a green and black color scheme. With all of the other colors mixed in too. Of course. Because there is no avoiding red (and/or plaid) at our house-haha!

Last week, I finally had a chance to sort through all of the decorations that were thrown up in the pure excitement of the season! We almost always go to the Christmas Tree Farm on the day after Thanksgiving to get our tree. After Crew growling at Santa last year, we stuck to the hot chocolate and tree search this year. I think we got a good one!

We decorated our tree with our red, green, wood and classic ornaments. I love it! I kept our red tree theme from last year, including a red bead garland and cute mitten garland. Our faux fur tree skirt was a Nordstrom Rack find a few years ago. I still love it!

Our couch threw me for a bit of a loop this year. It is our first year with this new sectional and I wasn’t sure which pillows to add and take away. Of course, it would have been fun to add all new pillows. But the budget didn’t allow for such things this year. I ended up purchasing a gray, green, and black plaid pillow. It’s amazing what a difference one pillow can make! It doesn’t match or really even coordinate with the other plaid pillows on the chairs. But, I’ve been seeing and hearing a lot about mixing plaids this year. So I thought I would just pretend that this was all part of my on purpose Christmas decorating planning. I also mixed in a favorite plaid throw blanket. (It’s actually a blanket scarf but I’m just capitalizing on the blanket part for now.)

I kept our mantle and bookshelves semi-simple this year as well. Using only items I already owned. I love the green and wooden trees from last year. The Ski Lift print is always a must during the holidays (even though we have long since given up dreams of being a downhill skiing family). The cedar garland made an encore this year too. I thought about layering more garland on top of it like I did last year but decided to try a more minimalistic approach. I also tried to be a bit more restrained with objects placed on the shelves on either side of the fireplace. I love our white ceramic deer, so he got the stamp of approval as did the papier-mâché Christmas ornament. This year, I swiped the kids’ snow globes to add a bit of Christmas whimsy. I love looking back on winters past and pictures of the kids are just the way to do that. A prop toboggan by their photos seemed appropriate. We have almost graduated from our nativity print. But since there has been a lot of soccer and volleyball close calls around the house this year (don’t look too closely at our entryway door), I’m giving it one more year just to play it safe. I already have my eye on some ceramic nativities for Christmas 2022.

I kept our vignettes on the cubes and my grandmother’s marble table simple. I just incorporated some fresh green sprigs to the black round vase. The table got our feathered tree and yarn tree. And that was that.
